Tree Removal Emerald

Razor Blade Tree Specialists works on hills properties in and around Emerald, from homes near Emerald Lake Park and the Puffing Billy line to bush blocks along Beaconsfield-Emerald Road and out toward Avonsleigh, Cockatoo and Menzies Creek. Tall eucalypts, sloping ground and bushfire planning all shape how we approach trees here. We are family owned, based at Narre Warren North since 2006, and every job is done by our own crew under a Level 5 qualified arborist.

About The Area

Emerald is a Dandenong Ranges township about 44 km south-east of Melbourne, with 5,890 residents at the 2021 census. It grew around the Nobelius family nursery, established in 1886 on 180 hectares, and the Puffing Billy heritage railway, which opened in 1900 and still has three stations in the locality: Emerald, Nobelius and Lakeside. Emerald Lake, also known as Lake Treganowan, sits within Emerald Lake Park, and the Emerald Country Club was founded on the northern part of the old nursery in 1923.

Which council is your property in
Emerald is split between two councils. Both Cardinia Shire and Yarra Ranges list Emerald as a locality whose territory is divided with another council, so the rules depend on exactly where your property sits. Check your rates notice or the planning property report before any tree work. Cardinia Shire Council is on 1300 787 624, and Yarra Ranges Council is on 1300 368 333. We will not tell you a tree can be removed until we know which council and which overlays apply.

Bushfire clearing rules
Cardinia's fire management plan describes the hills communities as sitting within or around large tracts of eucalypt forest, commonly stringybark and messmate canopies with dense understoreys. Victoria's bushfire vegetation exemptions may allow clearing without a planning permit. In a designated Bushfire Prone Area, the 10 metre rule allows removal of any vegetation, including trees, within 10 metres of an existing house built or approved before 10 September 2009, and the 30 metre rule covers vegetation other than trees within 30 metres. Where the Bushfire Management Overlay applies, the 50 metre rule extends clearing of non-tree vegetation to 50 metres. A fence line rule allows up to 4 metres combined clearing along a boundary fence built before that date. These exemptions do not apply to proposed buildings, do not override covenants, and the CFA fact sheet notes that in Yarra Ranges Clause 51.03 means not all of them apply. Where an Erosion Management Overlay applies, the state advises keeping vegetation or seeking expert advice because of landslide risk.

Other Cardinia controls
On the Cardinia side, a permit is likely for native vegetation on land of 4,000 square metres or more, and for vegetation under an ESO, VPO, DDO, HO, SLO or EMO. Trees on Council roads and reserves need Council's written consent under Local Law 17. Emerald is also one of three areas, with Beaconsfield and Pakenham, where Cardinia rather than AusNet handles reports about trees near power lines.

Local species and places
Cardinia's local plant guide lists indigenous trees including Messmate, Mealy Stringybark, Narrow-leaved and Broad-leaved Peppermint, Manna Gum, Swamp Gum, Blackwood and Silver Wattle. In Emerald, the bushfire Neighbourhood Safer Place, a place of last resort, was moved in 2018 from Worrell Recreation Reserve to Pepi's Land at 16 Beaconsfield-Emerald Road. Neighbouring localities include Avonsleigh, Clematis, Cockatoo, Menzies Creek, Macclesfield, Monbulk and Kallista.

What We Do

In Emerald we take down large eucalypts in sections where there is no room to fell, prune and reduce canopy over roofs and driveways, and clear fuel within the bushfire exemption distances once eligibility is confirmed. We also do stump grinding, land and block clearing, mulching and green waste removal, bamboo removal and hedge trimming. Our Level 5 qualified arborist can prepare arborist reports for either council. Storm and emergency call outs are available 24/7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Emerald in Cardinia Shire or Yarra Ranges?
Both. Emerald is split between Cardinia Shire and Yarra Ranges Council, so which rules apply depends on your exact address. Check your rates notice or planning property report. Cardinia is on 1300 787 624 and Yarra Ranges is on 1300 368 333.

Can I clear trees around my house for bushfire protection without a permit?
Possibly. In a Bushfire Prone Area, the 10 metre rule allows any vegetation, including trees, to be removed within 10 metres of an existing house built or approved before 10 September 2009, and the 30 metre rule covers non-tree vegetation within 30 metres. In the Bushfire Management Overlay, the 50 metre rule applies to non-tree vegetation. In Yarra Ranges, Clause 51.03 means not all exemptions apply, so check with Council first.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on a bush block in Emerald?
Often, yes. On the Cardinia side, native vegetation on land of 4,000 square metres or more, and vegetation under overlays such as an ESO, VPO, SLO or EMO, usually needs a permit unless an exemption applies. Yarra Ranges has its own controls, so confirm with the right council.

Who handles trees near power lines in Emerald?
On the Cardinia side, Emerald is one of three areas, with Beaconsfield and Pakenham, where Cardinia Shire Council handles power line tree reports. We do not work on trees touching live lines.

What trees do you remove in Emerald?
Cardinia's indigenous plant guide includes Messmate, Mealy Stringybark, Narrow-leaved and Broad-leaved Peppermint, Manna Gum, Blackwood and wattles, and we remove and prune all of these as well as planted exotics. Cardinia's fire plan describes stringybark and messmate canopies with dense understoreys as typical of the hills communities.

How much does tree removal cost in Emerald?
Hills jobs vary a lot with slope, access for equipment, tree height, nearby buildings and how much material needs to be removed or mulched. We give free, no-obligation quotes after seeing the site.

A tree has fallen across my driveway after a storm. Can you help?
Yes. We offer emergency call outs 24/7. Keep clear of the tree and any lines and call 0481 111 804. For unsafe trees on private property during storms, Cardinia also refers people to the SES on 132 500.

Can I send photos before an inspection?
Yes. Email photos to info@razorbladetreespecialists.com.au showing the whole tree, the base of the trunk, the slope and nearby buildings. Let us know whether your rates come from Cardinia or Yarra Ranges.
