About The Area
Keysborough is in the City of Greater Dandenong, about 27 km south-east of the CBD. It is named after the Keys family, who settled the area after 1878, and its post office opened as Noble Park South in 1973 before being renamed Keysborough in 1978. Springvale Road forms the western edge, EastLink the eastern, and Mordialloc Creek and Dandenong Creek form parts of the southern and eastern boundaries. Almost 90 per cent of homes are separate houses. The northern streets were mostly built from the 1960s into the 1990s, while the middle and south of the suburb have seen large residential estates since the 2000s.
The green wedge. Keysborough is one of three suburbs that make up the main part of Greater Dandenong's share of the South East Green Wedge. Council's Green Wedge Management Plan says its share of the wedge covers about 3,740 hectares, around 29 per cent of the municipality, including parts of Keysborough, Bangholme and Lyndhurst. Much of it was once the Carrum Carrum Swamp, drained in 1879. Remnant vegetation survives mostly along road reserves and drains and is identified mainly by River Red Gum, Manna Gum, Swamp Gum and Swamp Paperbark. Many River Red Gums now stand as scattered trees among pasture, lawns and market gardens, where they provide food and nesting for bats, birds and possums.
That land carries extra protection. A Vegetation Protection Overlay (Schedule 1 to Clause 42.02) protects native vegetation, in particular River Red Gums above a certain size, across the area roughly from Hutton, Perry and Glasscocks Roads south to Thompsons Road, between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and the Westernport Highway. Amendment C205gdan, gazetted on 4 October 2019, removed the overlay's expiry date, so it remains in force.
Suburban blocks. In the residential streets, council's Tree Protection on Private Land Local Law 2023 needs a permit to remove any tree with a trunk diameter of 40 cm or more at 1.4 metres. Clause 52.37 can also require a planning permit for canopy trees in residential zones, though it does not apply in the Low Density Residential Zone. On land over 0.4 hectares, Clause 52.17 controls removal of native vegetation. Council also warns that some land titles carry covenants or agreements restricting tree removal, which is worth checking on newer estates.
Keysborough Golf Club on Hutton Road and Coomoora Reserve are among the larger open spaces in the suburb. Council's planning enquiries line is 8571 1000, and we recommend calling with your address before any significant tree work.
What We Do
In Keysborough we split our time between estate homes and larger properties. On estate blocks the work is usually pruning trees back from roofs and fences, hedge trimming, removing trees that are too big for the garden, palm removal and stump grinding. On bigger lots near the green wedge we handle remnant eucalypt pruning to the Australian Standard, land and block clearing within legal limits, and mulching and green waste removal. We also offer storm and emergency work, bamboo removal and arborist reports for council applications.
Why Razor Blade
Keysborough has two very different kinds of tree job, and we are set up for both. Our Level 5 qualified arborist looks at the planning controls as well as the tree before we quote, and our own crew does the work, with no subcontractors. We are a family business that has been operating since 2006, carry $20 million public liability, and have 22 five-star Google reviews. Standard hours are 7am to 5pm, emergency call outs are available 24/7, and every quote is free and without obligation. The site is left clean when we finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Keysborough covered by the City of Greater Dandenong?
Yes. Keysborough is in the City of Greater Dandenong, so permits go through that council on 8571 1000. It was previously part of the former City of Springvale.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Keysborough?
On most residential blocks you need a local law permit if the trunk is 40 cm or more in diameter at 1.4 metres. A planning permit may be needed instead under Clause 52.37 for canopy trees, or under the Vegetation Protection Overlay in the green wedge area. We check which applies before quoting.
My property is near Hutton Road or Glasscocks Road. Are the rules different?
They can be. Land roughly from Hutton, Perry and Glasscocks Roads down to Thompsons Road sits under a Vegetation Protection Overlay that protects native vegetation, particularly larger River Red Gums. Assume a planning permit is needed for native trees there and confirm with council.
Do estate covenants affect tree removal?
They can. Greater Dandenong notes that some land titles include covenants or agreements that restrict vegetation removal. Check your title, particularly on newer estates, as well as the council rules.
How much does tree removal cost in Keysborough?
On an estate block it depends mostly on size, access and what is underneath. On larger lots, the condition of old eucalypts and the distance to drop-off points also matter. We quote on site, free and without obligation.
What native trees grow around Keysborough?
Council's green wedge plan names River Red Gum, Manna Gum, Swamp Gum and Swamp Paperbark as the main species in remnant vegetation. Old River Red Gums often stand alone in paddocks and lawns, and they provide hollows for bats, birds and possums.
Do you handle storm damage in Keysborough?
Yes, with 24/7 emergency call outs on 0481 111 804. Stay clear of hanging limbs and anything touching power lines until the area is made safe.
Can I email photos for a first look?
Yes. Send photos of the tree, its base and the access to info@razorbladetreespecialists.com.au. On larger properties, a photo showing where the tree sits on the block helps too.
