Tree Removal Springvale

Razor Blade Tree Specialists looks after trees across Springvale, from house blocks off Heatherton Road and Lawn Road to units and townhouses near the Springvale Road shops and the streets around Sandown. We are a family-owned business operating since 2006 out of Narre Warren North, with a Level 5 qualified arborist and our own crew on every job. Quotes are free, and we tell you plainly whether the City of Greater Dandenong needs to approve the work before anything is cut.

About The Area

Springvale is in the City of Greater Dandenong, about 22 km south-east of the Melbourne CBD. The suburb takes its name from natural springs in the area, which was home to the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung peoples long before the Spring Vale Hotel went up in the 1850s and the railway station opened in 1887. Today it is mostly residential, and at the 2016 census about 16 per cent of its 6,489 dwellings were apartments. A lot of tree work here happens on compact blocks, with fences, carports and neighbouring roofs close by.

Council permits. Greater Dandenong now has a Tree Protection on Private Land Local Law 2023, endorsed by Council in December 2023. Under it, removing a tree with a trunk diameter of 40 cm or more, measured 1.4 metres above the ground, needs a council permit. The application must include an independent arborist's report covering species, diameter, height, health, structure and retention value, and the owner's consent if you are not the owner. Council lists a fee of $113 per tree plus an $85 application fee. Pruning does not need a permit when a qualified arborist does it to AS 4373-2007 Pruning of amenity trees, the arborist's qualifications are provided and before and after photos are kept.

Planning rules sit over the top of the local law. Since 15 September 2025, Clause 52.37 has applied to canopy trees in all residential zones, meaning trees more than 5 metres tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres at 1.4 metres and a canopy at least 4 metres across. Council also defines a boundary canopy tree as one with part of its trunk within 6 metres of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 metres of the rear boundary. If a planning permit is needed, council assesses the tree under the planning scheme instead of the local law. Council's planning enquiries line is 8571 1000, and we suggest calling with your address before work is booked.

The local landscape. Springvale's gardens sit beside some very large open land uses: Springvale Botanical Cemetery, described as the largest of its kind in Victoria, the Springvale Crematorium and Necropolis, Sandown Racecourse and Raceway, and the SSAA range. The area was also worked for sand extraction until the 1990s. Council has a page dedicated to River Red Gums, noting they can live for up to 1000 years and that their hollows can take more than 100 years to form, so a big old red gum is treated very differently from a garden tree that has simply outgrown its spot.

Access is the other local factor. Springvale is criss-crossed by busy roads, including Springvale Road, the Princes Highway, Police Road, Westall Road, Centre Road and Corrigan Road. On those frontages we plan where the truck and chipper will sit, and how traffic and pedestrians will be managed, before the crew arrives.

What We Do

Most Springvale work is on suburban gardens and shared boundaries. We remove trees that have outgrown small backyards, prune limbs back from roofs, gutters and fences to the Australian Standard, trim hedges along front fences, take out palms and grind stumps so the space can be used again. We also handle storm and emergency work, bamboo removal, and arborist reports for applications under the Greater Dandenong local law. Mulching and green waste removal are part of the job, so nothing is left on the nature strip. If a permit is needed, we say so before quoting the removal.

Why Razor Blade

You deal with the same family business from the first call to the final rake-up. We have been operating since 2006, our Level 5 qualified arborist assesses the tree, and our own crew does the work, with no subcontractors. We carry full insurance, including $20 million public liability, which matters on tight Springvale blocks where a fence, carport or the neighbour's roof is often within reach of a falling limb. Standard hours are 7am to 5pm, and emergency call outs are available 24/7. Quotes are free, with no obligation, and we leave the site clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Springvale in the City of Greater Dandenong?
Yes. Springvale is in the City of Greater Dandenong, so tree permits are handled by that council. Its customer service and planning enquiries line is 8571 1000, or you can email council@cgd.vic.gov.au.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Springvale?
You do if the trunk is 40 cm or more in diameter at 1.4 metres above the ground, under council's Tree Protection on Private Land Local Law 2023. A canopy tree may also need a planning permit under Clause 52.37. We measure the tree on site and tell you which rule applies before quoting the removal.

Can a protected tree be pruned without a permit?
Generally yes, if a qualified arborist prunes it to AS 4373-2007, the arborist's qualifications are provided and you keep photos from before and after the work. Our pruning is done to that standard, and we can take the photos for you.

How much does tree removal cost in Springvale?
It depends on the tree's size, species and condition, how easy it is to reach, and what sits underneath it. Small Springvale backyards with narrow side access usually take more time and rigging than open front yards. We give a free on-site quote. Council fees, currently listed as $113 per tree plus an $85 application fee, are separate.

What trees will I find in Springvale?
Most Springvale trees are in home gardens. Across Greater Dandenong, council's green wedge plan identifies remnant native vegetation mainly by River Red Gum, Manna Gum, Swamp Gum and Swamp Paperbark, and council gives River Red Gums particular attention because of their age and hollows.

A storm has brought a limb down. What should I do?
Keep people away from the tree and any fallen wires, then call us on 0481 111 804. Emergency call outs are available 24/7. Council's local law allows emergency work where part of a tree is an immediate hazard to life or property, as determined by an arborist with at least an AQF Level 5 qualification. Our arborist is Level 5 qualified.

Can I send photos for a first opinion?
Yes. Email info@razorbladetreespecialists.com.au or text 0481 111 804. A shot of the whole tree, one of the base of the trunk, and one of the access path from the street are the most useful.

I rent my home. Can I apply to remove a tree?
Council requires the owner's consent when the applicant is not the owner, so speak to your landlord or agent first. We can quote and supply an arborist's report to whoever is making the application.
